I don't dispute that. The real problem is that for the Pope to directly appoint a new Grand Master, or for him to interfere in matters of internal governance such as declaring all of Fra' Matthew's acts since December to be invalid, are all violations of the Order's constitution. Even the Pope is bound to observe law. The proper course of action, if the Pooe feels obliged to take such drastic actions, would be to formally declare the Order's sovereignty and constitution revoked. The Modern Medievalisthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07238571174836044412noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6574198575168538104.post-87897115515949204932017-01-26T19:28:59.222-06:002017-01-26T19:28:59.222-06:00That's actually a really good post, Hapsburg R...That's actually a really good post, Hapsburg Restorationist.

Honestly, I haven't understood how the Pope commanding in *religious obedience* the leadership to change has anything to do with sovereignty.

It's not like, as far as I can tell, he's claiming a right to sack the Grand Master that's enforceable in Italian courts or anything like that. He's telling him to step down AS Pope, because he heads a religious order.

I mean, how is it any different than a pope excommunicating a king (or ordering the deposition of a king of a queen)? Aren't those very medieval concepts?

The fact that you're a sovereign wouldn't seem to mean that the Pope has no religious authority of obedience over you.A Sinnerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05083094677310915678noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6574198575168538104.post-58339459267993808742017-01-26T17:22:43.587-06:002017-01-26T17:22:43.587-06:00Here's the link; https://thewarforchristendom....Here's the link; https://thewarforchristendom.wordpress.com/2017/01/26/a-note-on-sovereignty-and-the-knights-of-st-john/

These are mostly my current thoughts, based on my understanding of Medieval Catholic philosophy. Though I respect you and agree with much of what you write elsewhere, I have to wonder if the fear-mongering and mistaken understanding of Sovereignty has not caused far greater harm to the Church than anything the Holy See has done.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15026478801255121280noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6574198575168538104.post-88233025200627117862017-01-26T15:41:35.670-06:002017-01-26T15:41:35.670-06:00I'm so sorry you and so many others have had t...I'm so sorry you and so many others have had to bear these things this week.
